Inventors and Patents From the City of Overland Park

The City of Overland Park is home to many companies that have been instrumental in the creation of new products. Some of these companies are Styrofoam, Cerner Innovation, Sprint Communications, and Soane Mining, among others. These companies are headquartered in Overland Park and can be proud of their accomplishments.

Styrofoam

Styrofoam is a plastic that is durable and can be molded or extruded. It is made from benzine and erethylene and is commonly used in packaging and building materials. Its development and invention has a long history. It was discovered in 1839 by Eduard Simon. His invention led to it becoming a widely-used product. In 2008, it was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

The invention describes polymer foams that have an open cell structure. They have a low density, ranging from 2.2 pounds per cubic foot. They also feature a high degree of uniformity and are non-collapsible. These polymers are also resistant to ozone, nitrogen oxide, and water.

The invention of Styrofoam is one of the most successful and widely-used products in the world. Its low cost and moisture-resistant properties allowed it to be used in a wide range of applications. Today, it has become the primary brand of insulation for homes, helping to improve energy efficiency and protect against the elements. However, it was not originally intended for this use.

Despite the widespread popularity of Styrofoam, it is still not a sustainable product for landfills. If buried in the ground, Styrofoam can last up to 500 years. If properly disposed of, it can be recycled at a Kansas City facility called ACH. The company also accepts single garbage bags.

The City of Overland Park’s Styrofoam inventors and their inventions are now known to the world. The first Styrofoam patent, D631,741, was filed in Overland Park, Kan., on Nov. 20, 2006.

Cerner Innovation

A new patent application was filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on 2020-06-04 for an interface engine architecture. The applicant for the patent is Cerner Innovation, Inc., and the inventors are Girish Chawla, Steven Allen Fine, Jerald Greg Mahurin, Nigel Timothy Meachen, and Rajneesh Mehra.

Sprint Communications

The city of Overland Park has been home to several inventors, many of them entrepreneurs. One such person is Wright Medical Technology Inc. who was awarded a patent for their invention. That patent was later assigned to Sprint Communications Co. LP, which will use it in its mobile phone service.

Another person is Michael T. Lundy, who was assigned a patent for a patent that relates to secure network areas. Another example is an application for mobile device authentication. This invention addresses the use of a smartphone or other mobile device to access secure network areas.

Soane Mining

Soane Mining is located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. It has received patent no. 10,570,037 and was originally filed on Jan. 30, 2017. Other co-inventors include Michael C. Berg of Somerville, Massachusetts; John H. Dise of Kirkland, Washington; and Kevin T. Petersen of Cheshire, Connecticut. Additionally, Atul C. Thakrar of Minneapolis is one of the co-inventors.
